Guidance Opportunity Classes (GOC)

学生 are referred to the Guidance Opportunity Classes through Student Placement Services in conjunction with the 特殊教育 office.

The educators at the Guidance Opportunity Classes focus on improving student skills in the areas of reading, writing and math so they have the academic tools necessary to experience success upon their return to a comprehensive school site. Middle school and high school students receive instruction in four core subject areas (English, 数学, 科学, 及社会研究). High school students also have elective options.

Upon enrolling in the Guidance Opportunity Classes, students are given English Language Arts and 数学 assessments. The assessments are used to create Individualized Learning Plans (ILP). 学生 and teachers work cooperatively to create an ILP with both academic and behavior goals. These goals are monitored often and modified when necessary. When students achieve both academic and behavior goals established in the ILP a transition plan is created and the student is transferred to a comprehensive school site. 学生 are visited at the comprehensive school sites by the Guidance Opportunity Counselor on predetermined dates to monitor their success.

Our class sizes are smaller than those at most traditional campuses. We have a student to teacher ratio of 15 to 1 which allows teachers to give students more individualized attention. School social workers are available to assist students and families receive needed social services. 社会 workers also conduct group and individual counseling with the students. Star View Community Services is available to provide school based social services and community based social services for GOC students and their families.

The Guidance Opportunity Classes are staffed with a skilled and caring group of educators who are committed to helping students gain the academic and social skills needed to be successful on a comprehensive school site and beyond.
